Flash Floods in Iligan City – Monday, May 18,
2009
Kathy Bohlin
Iligan City is nestled on the coastline of northern Mindanao in the Philippines. Surround by mountains and lush forests, it is known as a city of beautiful springs and waterfalls and beautiful tropical beaches.
We sponsor 102 children and youth in Iligan City, children who would have no hope for the future were it not for the help they receive to attend school. Many of them live along the banks of the river and under the bridges. The riverbank is a hazardous place to live because of the flash floods that sweep the area. So why do they live there? They would probably say they have no other place. They live there as squatters on the public riverbank because they are too poor to live anywhere else. They live in houses of plywood and bamboo with pieces of fabric for walls and doors.
Last Monday one of the strongest flash floods yet, swept along the riverbank through Iligan City, sweeping away homes and business and anything else in the way. Only one house was left standing. It is a house we helped build a little over a year ago. The money we sent was used to build a solid foundation with strong poles. The house was built up on the poles, something like you see on our beaches here in the US, except much smaller. Under the house was a pen for raising pigs, the income source for the family. (See photo below.)
When the floods came, many people fled to this house because they thought it was “a blessed house”. They carried the pigs up the stairs into the house. After the flood subsided, the house was still standing and everyone inside was safe.
Some families of our sponsored children lost everything they owned but are thankful no one lost their life. Today we sent $300 to the pastor of our children and their families. The money will be used to help the affected families rebuild their homes and lives. We hope more “blessed houses” will be built that will withstand future floods and will be a shelter for many. This gift is possible because of our ministry partners who have given to make such help possible.
Below are some photos and stories we received from our Iligan City pastor:

The City government provided some food, but because so many were affected in the area, their help is not enough. The churches are also helping their members.

This is the only house remaining in this place because the other houses were destroyed by the floods. The Fullness in Christ ministries had shared some money to rebuild the house after the first flood. They used it for the foundation and posts and the 2nd floor structure built on the poles.
People in the area believe that this house was built with
the blessings of God therefore they did not go away from this house
during the flood. Gena is our Bible study leader in the area and she gathered the
children in this place where they were saved from the floods. They are
so grateful for this “blessed house.” |

To God Be the Glory Pastor Rudy and church and the children. |
Through the work being done in Iligan city with the children and their families, the community is being impacted and lives are being changed for eternity. It is our goal that someday the children will no longer live in squatter’s communities on public land, in city dumpsites and by flood prone rivers. Instead they will be strong marketplace Christians in responsible positions where they are making decisions that will affect the nation.

Children Are A Good Investment
Kathy Bohlin
In these days of financial upheaval, everyone, it seems, is searching for a good investment. The Bible actually has quite a lot to say about financial management. Following God’s Kingdom principles is a sure way to be successful, perhaps not always in the ways of the world, but surely in the things that matter for eternity.
Here is a biblical principle of financial management according to a kingdom perspective:
Many of our ministry partners who sponsor children have been hit hard during the past year. Lost jobs, income reduction, loss of business have hit many. We have been blessed by those who have continued to sponsor their children even during these hard times and rejoiced when we have seen them blessed in return. They are investing in the lives of children and young people whose lives are being transformed and shaped to be world changers. The investment they make in the lives of these children is an investment stored in heaven as well as in the heart of a child. Here are some examples of such an investment and the heavenly returns:Matthew 6:19-21
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Rachel.
When we first met Rachel, she was 15, the oldest of 6 children. Her family
lived at the garbage dump for a city in the Philippines. They lived in a
shelter made of bamboo poles with plastic sacks stretched over them. No
electricity. No water. No bathroom. They lived by scavenging the dump for
items that could be used or sold. Rachel had gone to school through
6th
grade and had to drop out because there was not enough money for her to
continue. At 15, she was not in school and did not attend church. Without
help, Rachel would have spent her life as a dumpsite scavenger, just as her
parents had done.
In 2007, a sponsor was found for Rachel. She was thrilled with the thought of going back to school and dreamed of becoming a teacher. At the end of her first year of being sponsored, she had accepted Jesus as Savior and was active in the church youth group. She just finished her second year of being sponsored. At the end of this year, now age 17, she took a placement test and jumped from 7th grade to 10th grade! We are all excited for this achievement and look forward to her high school graduation. In a recent letter from her pastor he says concerning Rachel, “In the church, she is our youth area leader at the garbage site. I appreciate her so much.” Rachel is now helping other children by sharing her faith in Jesus and helping them grow in Christ.
The lady who sponsors Rachel is not wealthy, but has chosen to invest her treasure in the life of this young girl. Last year, she also began to sponsor Rachel’s younger sister, Emalen. The full return on this investment is yet to be seen, but lives have already been transformed as this family has come to know Jesus as Savior, other young people have received ministry, and these two sisters have hope for the future. Their sponsor may never meet Rachel or Emalen in this life, but she will surely find her treasure in Heaven when she meets them there.
Reygiel.
The first time we saw Reygiel was in a pre-school at the garbage dump. The
school was established by one of our local pastors because the children
living at the dumpsite were not prepared for school. Some of the children
were 10 or 11 years old, but because they had never had any schooling at
all, they needed help before enrolling in first grade.
When Reygiel graduated from pre-school, he was ready for first grade and was matched with a sponsor. Now this little boy, living with his father at the dumpsite could go to school and prepare for a future that would be better than his father could ever dream he could have. He goes to school all week and to children’s church at the dumpsite on Saturday.
His sponsor has invested in the life of this child, knowing and trusting God to care for her needs. Here is her testimony:
“I don't even know where to begin except to begin when I made the decision to sponsor
a child. Tears flow as I write this to you to exclaim the goodness and faithfulness of our Father in heaven. Every time I sowed into your ministry and sponsorship of the child assigned to me, I sowed for my children and my grandchildren. After learning that I would be transferring to be closer to my son and his family, my daughter's husband also received a transfer with a nice raise! I AM IN SUCH AWE AT THIS. I KNOW FROM THE DEEPEST PLACE IN MY HEART THAT IT WAS BECAUSE I WAS FAITHFUL TO TAKE CARE OF A CHILD THAT WASN'T MINE THAT MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN ARE SEEING THE BLESSINGS. God showed up in our lives and just blessed our socks off by returning our family to a place where we could be together again. No person could have planned this or even began to foresee this. I am just so thankful and humbled at HIS love.”
We were so blessed to read this. This lady received a tremendous return on her investment in the life of a child.
The returns on our investment according to Kingdom principles will come in ways we may not expect, but they will surely come in abundance. Seek the Lord about how to lay up your treasures in Heaven and trust Him for a good return on that investment.

Volume 1, Number 1
Roldan -- A Shining Star
Kathy Bohlin
>Roldan
is a young man who grew up at the garbage dumpsite of a large city in the
Philippines. His parents are dumpsite scavengers, doing the only thing they
can to provide for the needs of their family. Education for the children was
only a faraway dream. Everything about Roldan would say that he would repeat the cycle of poverty
inherited from the generations that went before him. But God had a different
plan for him.
A few years ago a man wrote to tell us he wanted to sponsor a child in the Philippines and Roldan was selected for him. He was behind other boys his age in his grade placement because he had not been to school much, but he seized the opportunity, went to school and studied hard. He accepted Jesus as his Savior and grew strong in the Lord under the leadership of his pastor.
In
2008, he graduated from high school, a great accomplishment. Another sponsor picked him
up to provide the additional cost for college and he began his first year in
college, studying computer science. Not only is Roldan now a college student,
but he has become an important part of ministry to other children who, without
Jesus and without an education, have little hope of being anything more than a
scavenger. The same ministry that found Roldan at the garbage sleep and live
literally on the street. They sleep on pieces of cardboard and eat whatever
they can find. These children, mostly boys, but some girls as well, come to a
drop-in center, often twice a day where they eat, shower, change into clean
clothes and have time to be kids. A favorite activity is to get a book, a
donated children’s book, find someone who knows how to read and ask them to read
the book out loud.
Roldan helps minister to these kids from the streets, giving them hope that they too can go to school, learn to read and have a better life than any of them ever dreamed. What a joy it is to see the gratefulness of this young man and see him now in a position to give as was given to him. When God spoke to that man a few years ago and said to sponsor a child in the Philippines, he obeyed. He did not know, at the time, the impact he would have on so many lives as his sponsored child came to the place where he could pass it on.
I am reminded of the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:35-40,
"Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.' Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.'"
As a young boy, Roldan might have been considered “one of the least.” He is no longer one of the least. He is becoming a mighty man filled with God’s Spirit, fulfilling the destiny God had in mind for him from the foundation of the earth. The man who heard the call to sponsor him and responded to that call will one day receive his reward from God the Father.
